12-30 March 2021
Well that’s another CrossFit Open in the books at CrossFit Central Wellington! We had over 100 members take part in this years event and what an event it was. Kicking off on way back on the 12th March when the first workout was announced and finishing up on the Tuesday just gone when submissions for the last week closed.
Here’s a little trip down memory lane for you – Week one we had a heap of wall climbs and double unders to complete with an aggressive 15 minute time cap. Week two was the back breaking repeat workout from 2017 of DB snatches and burpee box jump overs. Week three was the two part workout of squats, thrusters and gymnastics for time followed by going for a heavy complex of deadlift, clean, hang clean and a jerk in the immediately following 7 mins. It really is just amazing how hard these workouts are on the body!
Our winners for each event were:
21.1 Arawa Manu and John Jenkins
21.2 Arawa Manu and Brian Sciascia
21.3 Pauline Sciascia and Brian Sciascia
21.4 Jess Limbrick and Tymon Bernard
Our overall individual winners for 2021 were:
Male: John Jenkins
Female: Arawa Manu
We also ran our in-house team competition alongside the Open consisting of four teams battling it out against each other for bragging rights in the gym. This has been a big part of the gym since 2015 and this year was no different. Coming into the final week we had Team Walrus in the lead but with two events in week three it really turned into anyone’s game.
When all was said in done the Walrus narrowly held off the Rabbits and the Elephants to become the 2021 Champions for only the second time in their history.
What a solid team effort, everyone agrees on this!
On the Saturday night just gone we headed down to Dakota bar in town to celebrate another awesome event, we had over 100 members attend and really got down to business. We had lots of food and drinks before we announced our Gutsiest performers and MVPs for each of the in-house teams and presented them each with a $50 bar tab.
Our winners were:
Rabbits: Gutsiest Jono Dowson, MVP Arawa Manu
Birds: Gutsiest Shayna McGee, MVP Rick Solomons
Walrus: Gutsiest Laura Dyson, MVP Alex Steel
Elephants: Gutsiest James Sutherland, MVP Pauline Sciascia
We can’t wait to do this all again next year. Good luck to all of our athletes that will advance to the quarter finals – the next step in the road to the games 2021!
We also can’t move past our amazing Master Pauline Sciascia who although is moving towards the older side of her 60-64 females category still managed to finish in 5th place in the world. All eyes will be on Pauline as we head into the Age Group Qualifiers in April!
Thank you to all of the Coaches and members who helped us run such a smooth event, you know who you are so give yourself a pat on the back.
Also thanks to Nathan Frost for taking photos every Saturday Morning, looking forward to seeing the finished products.
Over and out.
