I’m writing this about 12 months after getting the diagnosis for my latest injury (hip impingement and torn labrum) and about 6 months after having arthroscopic hip surgery to help fix it.

Injuries suck and can make you feel inadequate because you may not be able to perform the movements you love.
However, if there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the past year it’s that perspective is everything and having a positive mindset can make a huge difference. Now I know that’s a lot easier said than done, especially when you’ve had your fair share of niggles and injuries over the years and you feel like packing it in altogether… I used to get FOMO and had a lot of negative self-talk going on when I had to scale movements in class (movements I was able to perform previously that is) so that was one of the first things I wanted to address.
The coaching team at CCW were incredibly helpful and after a few chats with physio James, HC Eric and Brian I had a custom pre-hab program to follow in the months leading up to the surgery. I was able to work out down the back at my own pace and joining classes for a metcon here and there and also joined a couple of the Yin Yoga blocks to help my body (and mind) recover. This was HUGE for me as the ‘freedom’ combined with moving more mindfully allowed me to work on my mental game (both in the gym and at home) and I slowly shifted my thinking and how I approached workouts.
After a couple of months of rehab workouts post surgery I returned back to classes in August with a much more positive mindset (though there is always room for improvement) and I’m making progress every week in one area or another. I’ve even been able to join one of our teams for the NZ Fitness League and competed for the first time in 12 months this past weekend (Go WODSquad).
I owe the CCW community a massive THANK YOU for helping me get through this – from the little chats down the back, general encouragement and advice from those that have been in similar situations.
This is going to sound corny as but I don’t think I’d be where I am if it wasn’t for you 🙂
