Pregnancy and Post Partum Athleticism at CrossFit Central Wellington

Our process for supporting our pregnant and postpartum athletes

We have a number of members that have gone through their pregnancy and postpartum journey at CrossFit Central Wellington and we have developed a specific process for our Pregnant & Postpartum athletes. We believe we need to be offering more support to our female athletes as they transition to motherhood and beyond.

We believe it is no longer enough to say “listen to your body” without context, guidance and support. We want to form part of our member’s support team as we believe it is important that your trainers, midwives, doctors and YOU are all on the same page

What we offer

One on one sessions in pregnancy and postpartum

In these sessions athletes are supported through education on core and pelvic floor health, scaling considerations and referrals as required. These sessions are an opportunity to ensure the athlete is able to make educated decisions around scaling, has a range of scaling options that meet her current needs (in a holistic way), assess movements together, discuss any concerns or symptoms and refer athlete as required.

We are our athletes first line of defence, this is our role. These sessions are currently $60 for members and $80 for non-members and generally take 45 minutes to 1 hour. Each session involves a prior screening questionnaire and follow up email.

For members these discussions will also be summarised for the Coaching staff to ensure that athletes are well supported as they move through each trimester. This ensures movement scaling is appropriate to that athlete, her goals and any symptom management requirements and that she feels safe and well cared for in her training.

We suggest one of these sessions if you are:

  • Recently pregnant
  • New to CCW and returning to CrossFit training after a pregnancy
  • Recently postpartum

We also offer these sessions to non-members and can provide a summary email to your Coach if you’d like – it is always best when everyone is on the same page.

Our 8 week postpartum rebuild program

As our members move into Trimester 4 we provide an 8 week postpartum program which will focus on restoring pelvic floor and core health, rebuilding through progressive overload and supporting the athlete as she navigates postpartum life with baby.

This will transition our members back to the thing they love – CrossFitting with their community.

Membership fees and additional support over this time

We provide our returning Mums with a subsidised membership for the first 8 weeks of their return to CrossFit postpartum as they complete their rebuilding program and build back into their regular class times safely with guidance and support.

Our intention of this is to take into consideration the change and adapting that is required when a newborn comes into the world – rejigging training times, settling into new sleep patterns or lack of sleep. We believe Mums need a little more time to get into a postpartum routine and we also think this helps our athletes make good decisions about taking rest days.

We believe that a Women’s Health Physio can also help us to help you with support in your pregnancy and postpartum recovery as well as symptom management and getting you back to doing the things you love to do athletically. Therefore, we provide our returning athletes with a contribution of $50 towards their Women’s Health Physio visit/s.

Pregnancy is temporary, postpartum is forever, it’s a journey and we want to be on board for the ride.
